Schlüter®-Ditra

In combination with tile coverings, Schlüter-DITRA provides waterproofing, vapor pressure equalization for moisture from below and decoupling for problematic substrates. DITRA is installed with a thin layer of tile adhesive suitable for the substrate, using a notched trowel (recommended size: 3 x 3 mm or 4 x 4 mm). The tile covering is laid directly over DITRA in accordance with current regulations, using the thin-bed method. Summary of functions:

a) Decoupling

Schlüter-DITRA decouples the covering from the substrate and neutralizes the stresses between the substrate and the tiled covering resulting from various deformations. With properly installed abutting joints and carefully sealed transitions to walls and structural members, DITRA creates a certified bonded waterproofing assembly with the tile covering. c) Vapor pressure equalization

Schlüter-DITRA's air channels, which remain open on the underside, also allow vapor pressure equalization in the event of moisture impact from below. d) Load distribution (load induction)

Tiles installed over DITRA in floor areas should be at least 5 x 5 cm in size and at least 5.5 mm thick. The square glue-filled recesses of Schlüter-DITRA transfer the mechanical stresses acting on the tile covering directly to the substrate. The information and tile thicknesses specified in the ZDB information sheet "Ceramic floor coverings with high resistance to mechanical stress", valid in Germany, must be observed. e) Bonded assembly

Schlüter-DITRA creates a strong bond between the tile assembly and the substrate thanks to the adhesion of the non-woven fabric in the adhesive mortar on the substrate and thanks to the mechanical anchoring of the adhesive mortar in the square tail recesses dovetail. To note

The thin-bed tile adhesive and the coating material used with DITRA must be suitable for the respective area of ​​application and meet the corresponding requirements. How Uncoupling Membranes For Tile Floors Work

The decoupling layer, or forgiving shear interface, provides open space cavities that allow in-plane movement, which neutralizes movement stresses between the building substrate and the tiled surface. Uncoupling membranes absorb any movement of the substrate and eliminate the transfer of that stress to the tile layer, helping to prevent loose or cracked tiles. These direct bonded systems can cause the tiles to crack, crack or peel away from the substrate because there is no mechanism for releasing the natural stresses that build up. In addition to providing decoupling, they can also serve as a waterproofing layer that protects moisture-sensitive substrates, such as plywood or OSB (oriented strand board), as well as providing heavy load distribution for ensure the durability of tile installations. A roll of DITRA (at 39" by 95.5', covering 323 square feet) weighs only 39 lbs compared to 495 lbs (22 sheets) of backerboard (covering the same amount of square feet), which means installers can load tile, underlayment and thinset more efficiently and at a faster rate. Using DITRA uncoupling membranes also produces little to no waste, allowing better inventory control for builders and the tightest possible project bids.
