Note that Carnival's oldest ships — those that are part of the Fantasy Class built in the 1990s — have relatively few balcony staterooms by today's standards (after modernization, several have about 150 balcony staterooms, out of a total more than 1,000 cabins in all). Here is a breakdown of the major cabin categories on Carnival Panorama, which is typical of newer ships in the line:
Inside cabins: 789 (39%)
Ocean view cabins: 254 (13%)
Balcony cabins: 891 (44%)
Suite: 70 (3%)
On older Carnival ships (and, in general, all older cruise ships), there are far fewer staterooms with balconies. On Carnival Ecstasy, inside staterooms and ocean view staterooms make up the majority (85% total) of accommodations, and suites make up 5% of rooms:
Inside cabins: 408 (40%)
Ocean view cabins: 468 (46%)
Balcony cabins: 98 (10%)
Straight: 54 (5%)

Note that on some Carnival ships there are specific categories of Balcony Staterooms that have larger balconies than most - and are wonderful for sitting and watching the waves.
